Our Unique Herbal Tradition
What makes Paul Penders different from other skincare companies?
Paul Penders is based on a tradition of skincare which has been proven effective. Our history of skincare started with Paul's grandmother some 100 years ago. She used to concoct her own unique herbal remedies for her salon clients. Paul realized how effective his grandmother's herbal know-how was and decided to make this family tradition available in his brand of skincare. This family recipe is known as LevensESSENTIE Gold™.
Tell me more about LevensESSENTIE Gold™.
LevensESSENTIE Gold™ (pronounced "layvens-ee-sen-see") is Dutch for "Essence of Life". It's our traditional Penders family recipe that is 100 years old. It originated from Paul's grandmother who used to run her own beauty salon in Holland back in the 1900s. Grandma Penders created the 22 herbal extract formulation which now forms the unique heart of all our Paul Penders solutions. This patent pending LevensESSENTIE Gold™ found in all Paul Penders solutions benefits you naturally, helping you maintain a healthy complexion and lustrous hair.
What is LevensESSENTIE Gold™ made of?
Paul Penders' patent pending LevensESSENTIE Gold™ now comprises the extract of 22 European, Chinese and Malaysian organic herbs such as angelica, arnica, calendula, chamomile, elderflower, ginger, ginseng root, honeysuckle, hops, horsetail, juniper, lavender, lemon balm, nettle, pegaga, peppermint, rosemary, sage, St John's wort, turmeric, witch hazel and yarrow.
What else is inside Paul Penders?
All good and gentle ingredients! Besides our patent pending LevensESSENTIE Gold™ available in all our products, we carefully select natural ingredients for their benefits and effectiveness. We believe there is no better beautician than Mother Nature and use only natural ingredients for our products. To understand our ingredients, please see
Ingredient Glossary.
Paul Penders Philosophy
Are your products suitable for vegans or vegetarians?
Yes they are. We do not use animal-derived products or by-products (such as beeswax, lanolin, silk and honey). Plus we do not use chemical FD & C colours at all. They are also certified Halal and safe for use by Muslims.
What is your policy on animal testing?
Good question. We are totally against testing cosmetics or skincare on animals. Our founder, Paul, was booted out of his home country, Holland, for refusing to test his skincare products on animals. Find out more about Paul and the compassionate nuns who helped him with his no-animal testing philosophy.
Do Paul Penders products contain preservatives?
Preservatives are needed to help skincare products stay fresh and free from bacterial growth when they are used over a period of time. However, we use natural preservatives to preserve the efficacy of our products. At Paul Penders we use a preservative system made from Vitamins A, C & E, sorbic acid, cinnamon extract and grapefruit extract. We do not use urea or parabens like methyl, propyl & butyl parabens.
What are the dangers of using parabens?
Parabens (methyl-, propyl-, and parahydroxybenzoate) are the most widely used chemical preservatives for shampoos, shaving gels, cleansing gels, moisturizers and toothpaste. Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers. It is wise to remove parabens from your daily use if you value your health.
What are FD&C colours? Are they really health hazards?
Researchers in Japan and USA found several FD&C colours to be carcinogenic and the FDA admits areas of concern and cannot guarantee that they are safe for consumers. FD&C colours were withdrawn from lipsticks and eye shadows but women around the world still 'eat' these health hazards when they put on their lipstick! You can switch to
Paul Penders lipsticks as ours are made with natural pigments.
Do you sponsor community events?
Paul Penders is a big community supporter. We donate towards a vegetarian restaurant in Kuah town, Langkawi (where Paul Penders International is based currently). Anyone can have a free, delicious and healthy vegetarian meal cooked the Buddhist way. Paul Penders also finances eye surgeries for the blind children in China, enabling them to lead normal lives again. When the Asian tsunami hit in 2004, Paul Penders was the first company to donate a sizeable sum to the local mosque on Langkawi island. Paul Penders also sponsors Leslie McMillan, the 55-year old triathlon athlete from New Zealand, who participates annually in the Langkawi International Iron Man Triathlon competition on Langkawi island. Paul Penders is also helping a thriving community of women herb farmers in Vanamoolika, India.
