Ginseng (Panax Ginseng) strongly stimulates circulation, and is known as an adaptogen, which means it increases resistance to physical, chemical, and biological stress and builds energy and general vitality.

Panax Ginseng (Asian ginseng) grows in the Northern Hemisphere in Eastern Asia (mostly northern China, Korea, and eastern Siberia, typically in cooler climates. It is a slow growing plant with fleshy roots; it requires years for a ginseng root to reach maturity.

The botanical name Panax means “all-heal” in Greek and the word ginseng is said to mean “the wonder of the world”.

The root is most often available in dried form, either whole or sliced. Ginseng leaf, although not as highly prized, is sometimes also used; as with the root it is most often available in dried form.

According to traditional Chinese medicine Asian ginseng promotes energy, improves circulation, increases blood supply, revitalizes and aids recovery from weakness after illness, and stimulates the body.

In China, ginseng is as well used particularly for dyspepsia, vomiting and nervous disorders. A decoction of 1/2 oz (14 g) of the root, boiled in tea or soup and taken every morning, is commonly held a remedy for consumption and other diseases.

In Western medicine, it is considered a mild stomachic tonic and stimulant, useful in loss of appetite and in digestive affections that arise from mental and nervous exhaustion.

There are 11 distinct species of Ginseng, with Asian ginseng and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) as the two most common. According to traditional Chinese medicine, each type of ginseng is thought to have unique healing properties; a ying and yang perception of the two varieties.

American ginseng has more "cooling" properties, which make it valuable for fever and respiratory tract disorders, where Asian ginseng has "heating" properties, which are good for improving circulation.

Ginseng root is an important part of LevensESSENTIE Gold® because of its strong stimulating effect on circulation.
