Horsetail (Equeisetum hyemale), aka Rough Horsetail or Scouring Horsetail, is a herb much used in China to accelerate the healing process of wounds.

Horsetail grows in moist forests, forest edges, steam banks and swamps. It is native to much of the North American continent, as well as in similar climates in Europe and Asia.

The stalks rise from rhizomes that are deep underground and almost impossible to dig out. Its rough bristles have during ages been used to polish and clean pots. Boiled and dried, it has been used as fine sandpaper, especially in Japan.

Horsetail is a “living fossil”, as it is the only known genus of the entire class Equisetopsida which for over one hundred million years was very diverse and dominated the lover parts of the forests back then – being able to reach a height of up to 30 meters (100 feet).

The horsetail herb is considered one of the few cosmetic agents that works to beautify from the inside rather than just to alter external appearance. The texture of hard tissues is greatly improved by horsetail. It is also considered as a herb that strengthens the bones and the teeth of people.

As mentioned earlier, in traditional Chinese medicine horsetail is a much used herb to accelerate the healing process of wounds.

In Europe, Horsetail has been used as a diuretic for the treatment of edema (swelling and fluid retention). It is occasionally used for osteoporosis, kidney stones, urinary tract inflammation, and topical wound healing.

Horsetail is a part of our LevensESSENTIE Gold® herbal extract due to its mild diuretic effect, its richness in minerals and wound healing abilities.
