Fresh from the oven!

Guess what? Paul Penders Co. is going to create a new website for PP Europe, which is to cater to the European market.

I was in Penang last weekend and I managed to dig out some time to meet up with Krista and Nic from Red Box Studio, a website designing company that designed Paul Penders’ first website. Came along with me was Nash, my friend who is a photographer like me but is ready to take up photography jobs. We were sitting in a cozy cafe where the discussion about taking photos for the new website took place.

Katja Penders

Katja Penders

During the briefing, me and Nash were told that Katja would be the model, who would have her photos taken amidst of the lush beauty of Langkawi. Besides, PP products and fresh ingredients would also be included in the website, along with close-up shots of natural herbs and flowers. During the brainstorming session, Krista and Nic were very helpful in providing ideas on how to take good photos that meet the requirements.

Last night, me and Nash made an appointment to meet up with Katja to let her know about where to take photos, what to wear, what to bring and how the photos would be taken. She also gave us some of her ideas based from her 2-year experience as a model and it was very helpful. We also showed her photos from professional photographers found on the Internet that gave us the inspirations. She loved them! And I could see that she was as excited as we were.

We had arranged the photo-shoot to be done during this weekend. I feel optimistic about the photo-shoot because I strongly believe that we will work well together. I can’t wait to start!

A Matter of Conscience…

This was only supposed to be a short story. A few lines introducing the video below – and not much more.

The video is a cartoon that urges you not to buy cosmetics tested on animals. Exactly in line with one of our basic principles: No products from Paul Penders have EVER been tested on animals, as you might know.

But why is it so? What exactly made Paul Penders take this stand decades ago?

OK, this story will be a little longer than a few lines, because – out of curiosity – I had to ask Paul about the background. And Paul’s story turned out to be a very entertaining one; it is humorous, it is interesting, and it is terrifying, all at the same time.

Here is the story, as Paul Penders told it:

Paul Penders

Paul Penders

When I started to make cosmetics, I had no idea that animal tests were needed. Back then, in Holland, I was asked to show up at a government laboratory, and then they would tell me how I for sure would know that my products were safe. I had no idea what was going to happen and I was very excited when I went. What I did not know, was that it was a university animal testing laboratory…

Upon arrival, I was welcomed by a professor in a white coat. I handled him a box with my products which were supposed to be tested. Then he told me the products were going to be tested on animals! I was curious that my products were going to be tested on animals and not on human beings – because I was making products for people, not for animals…

I became excited and thought they were going to wash dogs and cats and blow them dry… while the animals would happily wag their tails and look shiny and clean. So I asked the professor, please let me see how you guys do that… I thought I could maybe give a helping hand, before the long travel back to my hometown at the other end of the country.

A free, healthy and happy rabbit

A free, healthy and happy rabbit

Sure, said the white coat and he then led me through the big building and we entered a room: I saw a long row of rabbits in cages with their heads fastened in wood and limbs cramped. Some had terrible damaged eyes, swollen, gray, and some were so crippled that it defies description. I became so upset seeing this. “Hey Prof.”, I asked, “You are not going to use my products on these innocent creatures – right?”

He said: “But yes, Paul. This is why the Dutch FDA (Food & Drug Administration) sent you here today”

I kept on staring at the animals and thought I would become crazy – so much pain and misery were inflicted to these animals – and then I needed to flee the room to throw up! When I came back, I told the white coat, that he would NOT and NEVER be allowed to do testing on animals with ANY of Paul Penders products or ANY of the ingredients.

The white coat started to laugh in a devilish way and said: “OK, Paul. Then I will have to call the highest FDA officer and tell him about this. You will be getting many legal problems, and at the end they will close your factory.”

StopI left, and he called…

Later, I was asked to attend a meeting at the boss of the FDA. He told me that I was not working according to the law. He warned me and told me to start animal testing immediately or they would take legal action against me. I was in deep trouble, because I had a brand new factory and I did not want to go bankrupt.

So I started a campaign to inform and warn consumers and government parties about what was going on. Nobody actually knew about all these terrible things that happened to the animals behind closed doors – in order to “ensure that products were safe!”

I got attention right from the beginning of the campaign and I became the first animal rights activist who was fighting against the testing of cosmetics on animals.

I used a convent of nuns. I was on TV and travelled around Europe and gained much support. But at the end… Well, the law is the law, and they came to close my factory.

Luckily, before they came, I had moved the entire company outside the country; to USA.

ApprovedThe FDA in USA turned out to be much more intelligent and they allowed me to start manufacturing there immediately. They used the GRAS list (Generally Recognized As Safe) when approving my products, explaining that when the ingredients were approved already – which they were – there was no need to do any testing on animals.

Ironically
, after several years, Holland became the first country to ban testing of cosmetic products on animals by law.

Though ironically
, it was a victory and I was a very happy man. Later on England and many other countries followed.

I never returned to Holland and I forgave the professor in the white coat, because after all, what he did was only to enforce the law as it was back then.

Sometimes law
is so stupid and illogical and it takes a fight to overthrow or change it. We did it – and it was a remarkable journey.

Dr. Gatot

The man behind many of Paul Penders’ new products, test and ideas, is the leader of our R&D (Research and Development) – Dr. Gatot.

Besides being a natural (organic) born genius when it comes to researching and creating natural organic cosmetics, Dr. Gatot is a very pleasant man to spend time with.

Always willing to explain and answer questions when asked by someone like your blog writer, who has forgot most of the chemistry, he leaned at school.

The explanation is done in a very enthusiastic way, using plain, understandable words, without making it more difficult that it is.

If Dr. Gatot is using a scientific term, he will in the same moment explain to you what it means – using words even a layman like me will immediately understand.

Another pleasant thing is that an explanation from Dr. Gatot always involves humor. Science does not have to be boring at all!

Paul Penders Headquarters

Yes, we really appreciate having Dr. Gatot around, here at Paul Penders’ headquarters on Langkawi UNESCO Geopark.

But, sometimes we have to let him out of the R&D department – and be without him for a while – like it happened last month.

As a part of keeping the company abreast of the newest developments in the cosmetic industry, Dr. Gatot attended a seminar on “cosmetic ingredients – safety and health”, held at the Pertanian University, here in Malaysia.

The seminar mainly served as a platform for information sharing, as well as specific topics were handled; for example the newest regulations from the European Union were discussed.

The main topic, though, was the discussion of a “Global Harmonized System of classification of cosmetic ingredients”.

Purple BookIn 2002 the United Nations published the “Purple Book” which includes descriptions of a worldwide harmonized classification.

The importance of the “Purple Book” is underlined by the fact that various evaluation criteria can be used for the same substance – depending on where in the world the evaluation takes place.

This is one of the problems we endure in the cosmetic industry: sometimes a substance is considered harmful in one part of the world and in another part of the world – to the contrary – it is considered not harmful!

Of course, this leads to confusion and to different levels of protection for the consumer as well as for the environment.

This is why the Global Harmonized System (GHS) is so important, because it offers a first-ever global and uniform basis for the evaluation of substance properties.

A further development of the “Purple Book” should lead to a better and safer protection of the consumer and of our environment.

Loaded and energized with new information, Dr. Gatot has now returned to Langkawi and his laboratory.

Life is back to normal again, here at Paul Penders…

This unique formulation operates in harmony with the physiology of the skin to prevent or treat stretch marks and scars effectively. Alpha Bisabolol is highly effective in anti stretch mark treatments. It is specifically designed with antioxidants and enzymes which works as collagen and elastin boosters and as “cell communicating” agents.

The combined ingredients contribute to orchestrating a balance between degradation of cells that are dying periodically, and cells that have become damaged by overstretching.
