A New R&D Member Ready To Go After Her Dreams

I feel always so very proud that our company has been able to retain its own R&D lab. Therefore we always create new product developments exactly the way we want these to be. We are not caught in the hands of one of the industry manufacturers (called: “OEM” or: contract manufacturer)
 
Most cosmetics (also natural and organic cosmetics) are produced by large manufacturers who can dictate formulations. Sometimes they keep little secrets. Paul Penders manufacturing is done by our partners Chan and Anne who are also personal friends for over 15 years.
 
What you must know is that it is very rare that a company of our size has its own full-scale R&D lab. We count our blessings we are able to finance total formulation freedom in this regards having competent and experienced R&D staff aboard. We always are on the lookout for new talent as well. Recently we added a new member to our R&D department and I wish to tell you more about a young, promising cosmetic chemist who shows her colors by determination.
 
Nora, only 25 years old, has a pretty impressive mindset and is ready to get her teeth in Paul Penders new product development. She has going for her an excellent study under Professor Dr. Abdul Khalil Shawkataly at the University of Science in Penang, Malaysia

She has a degree in food technology but also in business management as well. That interesting mixture caught right away my intention when she wrote me out of the blue skies that she wanted a job at Paul Penders!
 
Nora has a keen interest in quality control matters. She also has experience in the halal application process (see paulpenders.com what that means in terms of cleanest products). Nora also studied microbiological checking on products. Besides her huge interest in natural cosmetics, she is a also committee member of the Japanese language club in Malaysia and a contestant for German language as well.
 
Promising new talent in Paul Penders Company. What brought Nora to –almost- selling herself to our company? I like to explain Nora’s plans she has for Paul Penders. And when I finally met her in person after she was hired by our team, I believe now this young lady can reach her goals… Here is what Nora says…

         “…My intention is to make Paul Penders product range to become wider with more choices for our customer according to the latest market demands. We know that women nowadays are almost obsessed of looking and feeling their best. I wish to go almost to the extreme by adding even more natural ingredients yet effective for our skincare and makeup products.
     
         For example, we can make makeup products like foundation (i know we already have foundation) that not just give a good and smooth coverage but can also treat the skin every time when applied, so, one product with multiple functions.
     
         Same goes to lipsticks as well. Later on we try to make natural lip treatment, or a special exfoliating cream I have in mind and be assured that women will love them! We also can further improve some of our formulations and test them even more to meet customers’ expectation in all countries of the world. These are among few things I have in mind for the brand…”.

Honestly speaking, I am impressed with this ambitious “to-do” list of a young lady. Last week I was at the Penang office and glanced through the glass wall of our lab and saw Nora very busy touching, smelling and shaking all lab bottles and all lab equipment to determine whether all would be up to the task! Apparently all of it got her seal of approval because from there she took off to work!

Nora is still professionally assisted under great care by Yvonne, our trusted and dependable lab manager. With Dr. Gatot still at the background during all the “hocus pocus” of sudden new creative lab happenings 🙂 – I am sure – something good will come forwards from the mind of this young persistent lady.

The Get-together Dinner

I had been invited to a dinner on Monday night and was asked to be at Paul Penders office from 7.30pm onwards, when the guests were expected to be arriving. Upon reaching, I was amazed to see the brightly lit up office building. The lights made it look like a magnificent mansion from far away. See the photo of Paul Penders office taken during the day.

As I entered into the building, I was greeted by unrecognized faces but with firm handshakes and shy smiles. I proceeded upstairs and I saw Susan. I remember putting in a contribution from her into Paul Penders blog regarding the changes of her skin and life after using Paul Penders products. Besides, she is also a regular reader of the blog who leaves comments occasionally. Although it’s my first time meeting her, I felt a sense of familiarity with her. She looked beautiful in her midnight blue dress, which she paired with a seashell necklace. I was impressed with her fair and smooth skin that barely had any make-up on.

As the time passed, more guests began to turn up. I thought there would only be the Langkawi staff and I was taken aback to see more than 20 people showed up that night, who came from different places including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Bangkok, Vietnam, and Netherlands. They were the distributors, the staff in the Langkawi headquarter, the website designers and the representatives from the manufacturing, packaging and shipping, and others who work indirectly with Paul Penders company.

I had also met Chan and Anne, a couple who is in charge of the manufacturing in Kuala Lumpur, Kaye and Lee Booi from the Green Meadow, and Mariek, the talented and experienced Executive Director of worldwide Marketing & Sales, and Nic and Krista.

After everyone had arrived, we made our way to the lawn in front of the office building for dinner. Although the buffet spread was simple, the food was wholesome and extravagant. Our meal was completed with fried noodle, fried rice, sambal chicken, mutton curry, stir-fried vegetables, salad, sambal prawns, fresh pegaga, hotdogs, nuggets and French fries, and pudding for dessert.

A variety of beverages were served to cater to different age groups and individual preferences, such as orange juice, soft drinks, mineral water, beer, wine and Whiskey.

After a hearty dinner, everyone started to mingle around and take photos to preserve the memories of that night. Some of the married ones brought their family along too and the kids were having fun playing tag and hide-and-seek together.

Although the party wasn’t a grand one, the chance to understand more about this company and the excitement of meeting new people made the night a memorable one. As the night progressed, the guests gradually left the party. We bid each other goodbye and wished goodnight. I went home covering sweat (due to the humid weather in Langkawi), but I was all wrapped up with friendly hugs and kisses. Thanks for the wonderful dinner and experience, everyone!
