The flora of Paul Penders – Today: Peppermint Essential Oil

This is the seventeenth part of our series where we take a look at all the 22 ingredients in Paul Penders’ patent pending LevensESSENTIE Gold® herbal extract which is a part of all Paul Penders products.

Peppermint Essential Oil (from Mentha Piperita) is obtained through steam distillation of the leaves. The essential peppermint oil possesses antiseptic and anti-inflammatory characteristics that cools and soothes skin.

The peppermint plant is a cross between two types of mint – water mint and spearmint. It grows to about 60-90 cm (2-3 feet) tall, and bloom from July through August, sprouting tiny purple flowers among its fragrant, dark green leaves.

Peppermint is native to Europe and Asia, is naturalized to North America, and grows wild in moist, temperate areas. Some varieties are indigenous to South Africa, South America, and Australia.

Peppermint oil has been cultivated since ancient times, having been found in Egyptian tombs as far back as 1,000 BC. Historically, the herb has been known for its medicinal uses. Hence it is often termed as the world’s oldest medicine.

The leaves and stems, which contain menthol, are used medicinally, as a flavoring in food, toothpaste, chewing gum, tea, ice cream, as well as in cosmetics.

Unlike many other herbs and essential oils, numerous health benefits of peppermint and peppermint oil have been studied and proved by the scientific community. As a result, peppermint oil is also sold in the form of capsules and tablets.

Essential peppermint oil contains numerous minerals and nutrients including manganese, iron, magnesium, calcium, folate, potassium, and copper. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A and vitamin C.

Menthol, which is present in abundance in peppermint oil, helps in clearing the respiratory tract. As a result, the oil is used in numerous cold rubs.

Peppermint oil is a good home remedy for nausea and headache. Applying peppermint oil in diluted form on the forehead is known to remove headache.

The muscle relaxing property of peppermint oil has been found to ease irritable bowel syndrome. This has been validated through preliminary scientific research though the exact mechanism is still unknown.

Peppermint oil can be used externally for providing relief from pain. It is believed that the presence of calcium antagonism in peppermint oil aids in removing pain. It is cooling in nature and therefore helps reduce fever.

Peppermint oil increases immunity to diseases and therefore helps in preventing a number of diseases. It also improves the blood circulation.

As mentioned, peppermint oil contains menthol, which is good for skin, because it gives a cooling effect. Further it nourishes dull skin and improves oily skin.

In hair care, peppermint oil is very useful as it gives a cooling effect to the head.

Only the best natural organic peppermint essential oil finds its way into Paul Penders’ LevensESSENTIE Gold® herbal extract, on which all Paul Penders products are based.

Few Unique Benefits Making Botanical Cosmetics More Effective.

LevensESSENTIE Gold ® is the beauty secret to every Paul Penders product. It’s a concentrated extract of 22 certified organic herbs, of which was the start was pioneered by Paul’s grandmother some 100 years ago in Holland.

The today’s version of this unique, concentrated, organic herbal extract is made from a mixture of eastern and western herbs from USA, China, Europe and Malaysia. LevensESSENTIE Gold ® has been proven to provide a healthy complexion.

Its extraordinary anti-aging ingredients, such as vitamins A, B, C & E, enzymes and phyto-tocotrienols counteract the early signs of aging and sustain a healthy skin.

Pegaga is a characteristic rainforest herb with anti-bacterial and healing properties.

Pegaga is native to Langkawi Geopark and an essential part of the LevensESSENTIE Gold ® herbal extract that is used in all Paul Penders products. Pegaga is known as ‘miracle hero’ of the rainforest because it helps to heal the body in many wondrous ways.

It is a traditional medicine used to alleviate fatigue and depression, but also known as a ‘beauty herb’ because it clarifies skin for greater radiance and glorious fresh looks.

Pegaga has been used since ancient times, especially in the ayurvedic medical system of India and in Chinese traditional medicine. Pegaga is even recommended by the World Health Organization as one of most important medical plant species to be conserved and cultivated.

Coconut water

Coconut water has been used for medicinal and cosmetic properties in Southeast Asia for thousands of years because it is rich in lipids, lauric acid and glucids as well as vitamins, nutrients and minerals. For generations, Asian women have used fresh coconut water to cleanse the face, and coconut fruit in moisturizers that keep the face and body young. Coconut water regenerates, revitalizes, moisturizes and softens the skin. All Paul Penders products (excluding lipsticks and powder products) include coconut water.

Enzymes
Loaded with anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals, enzymes are catalysts for cell renewal. By capturing free-radicals and thus preventing damage caused by pollution, bacteria and sun, enzymes are capable of effecting changes such as wrinkle reduction and a healthier glow. Together with liposomes, the enzymes in Paul Penders skincare products can open blocked skin pores to prevent whiteheads and blackheads; hydrolyze oils for smoother skin finish and remove dead skin cells.

Enzymes create finer skin texture and reduce pore size when used over time. Papaya (papain) and pineapple (bromelain) enzymes are strongly beneficial to beautiful and a fresher looking skin.

Ceramides
Paul Penders cosmetics stop the decline of natural ceramide levels of our skin by using a liposome-based delivery system. A decline in the skin’s natural ceramide levels, over time, results in the familiar signs of aging, however skincare products with added ceramides increase the skin’s total moisture content.

Utilizing a liposome-based delivery system, ceramides and other anti-aging ingredients can readily target skin locations most in need of protection.

No Heat during Processing
The effectiveness of our skincare products, containing many fragile bio-active ingredients, would be minimized, or even destroyed, with the typical hot manufacturing process. Paul Penders uses a cold blending technology where products made in small batches are not heated above 35°C.

Paul Penders herbal skincare containing LevensESSENTIE Gold ® herbal extract with added ceramides, liposomes and coconut water, as well as various vitamins offer effective and powerful results. The “cold-blended” manufacturing system ensures that all bio-active ingredients remain at full strength making our products most effective as possible.

Natural Cosmetics are Dangerous without Proper Preservatives

Paul Penders natural herbal products are good for your skin but the various different natural ingredients can also be growing microorganisms. These cannot be seen with the naked eye but a virus or bacterial or fungal cell reproduces rapidly if they are not controlled using a proper preservative system in our products.

An excessive amount of microorganisms affects the product (and you) in a number of ways:

  • it can cause undesired odors
  • it can destabilize our creams and lotions
  • it can cause color changes to the products
  • it can create skin itching as well as serious infections

Therefore our products must be always properly preserved.

We use a few microbiology tests including “aerobic plate count test” which shows how many bacteria are in a product at the time of testing. Then there is the “challenge test” that shows how well a preservative system works in our product over a period of time.

All products that contain water substances (incl. plant and herbal extracts) require an adequate preservative system to prevent microorganisms from growing making the product unsafe for use.

Several “friendly” preservatives and anti-oxidants are available such as L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), sorbic and citric acids, retinol palmitate (vitamin A), honeysuckle, potassium sorbate, tocopherol (vitamin E), water melon, green tea and white tea extracts, tea tree and rosemary essential oils, grapefruit seed extract and more.

All Paul Penders products contain a thoroughly tested preservative system. They insure that our products containing high quality natural ingredients remain fresh over a prolonged period of time.

Each production batch we make is ALWAYS microbiological tested by an independent, professional lab. After these microbiological tests are completed this company provides us with a written statement that certifies that this particular batch is safe to be used for our customers worldwide. Only after we have received the certification from this specialized lab do we start filling the product batch into bottles, tubes and jars.

A properly designed preservative system will not only prevent our products from undesired growth of microorganisms, but they also prolong the shelf-life of the products by stabilizing them, to make sure that our creams, lotions and shampoos do not separate or otherwise deteriorate.

From Langkawi to Your Home

Paul Penders Headquarters
Paul Penders Headquarters

Before your Paul Penders natural herbal cosmetics arrive at your home, it has been on a long journey.

It all begins on Langkawi UNESCO Geopark island in Malaysia, where our products are developed at our lab at Paul Penders Headquarters.

It is also here we process 22 organic herbs into LevensESSENTIE Gold tm organic herbal extract.

LevensESSENTIE Gold is a unique 100 years old organic herbal extract developed by Paul Penders through generations and is a part of all Paul Penders products.

The next step in the manufacturing process takes place at our GMP premises in Kuala Lumpur.

GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practice and is a license provided by the government that ensures that all elements of the entire manufacturing process live up to the highest safety and quality standards available.

LevensESSENTIE Gold

LevensESSENTIE Gold organic herbal extract is then mixed with many other natural ingredients; the formulation depends on which product is going to be produced.

We use a cold-blending process, which is a unique process developed by Paul Penders.

The cold-blending is done in small portions and has several steps. The mix of ingredients is not heated above 35 degrees Celsius (63 F) which ensures that all the bio-active ingredients remain at full potency.

You would then think the next step would be to fill the finished product into bottles and jars… but not yet!

Before filling, all batches are checked by an Australian ISO 9002 lab, in order to ensure that each batch is totally clean and that the product is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Not before then, the batch will be certified and is now ready for the next step.

Then, after the certification, the products are filled into bottles and jars and then transported to our packaging and shipping facility.

From there the shipping is being done to the countries we sell our products to.

So, this is the journey your Paul Penders product goes through, no matter if you have bought it online or in your local retail store.

But each Paul Penders product always starts its journey from the tropical rainforest island of Langkawi UNESCO Geopark.
