The Beauty of Lemons…
We all know that eating fruit brings lots of benefits for the body. But — how often have you thought about their benefits for the skin and hair? One such beneficial fruit is the lemon — rich in vitamins C and B6, iron and calcium. Lemons are among the best natural substances to help control skin problems like acne scars, dark spots and sunburn.
Lemon juice is a rich source of citric acid, containing about 1.44 grams of the acid per ounce. Biochemists consider it a weak organic acid – one of the alpha hydroxys (AHA) so popular in commercial skin products today.
Mix lemon juice with water or into your favourite cleanser or scrub to remove dead skin cells and reduce blemishes. Be aware that it has a drying effect, so it’s best to dilute lemon juice or you may feel it sting and burn.
Lemon juice is also used as a skin lightener.
To brighten up your skin, rub half a lemon on any dark areas like elbows, backs of hands, and knees. Repeat every day until you notice an improvement in pigmentation.
Be careful on your face because lemon is both astringent and known to increase photosensitivity – you could end up darker than before! Just remember to follow up with a moisturizer and sunscreen for increased protection. Because it is so drying, lemon treatments should be limited, maybe 2-3 times per week at the most.
Lemons lighten and clean…
Wise women have known for centuries that you can highlight your hair with a lemon juice or vinegar rinse after shampooing. Rinse with 1 part lemon to 3 parts water, then go out in the sun. Soon you’ll see a difference!
For those with oily skin, clogged pores or blackheads, lemon juice can be a treat for your skin. Squeeze a lemon, then soak a cotton ball or gauze pad in the juice and apply by lightly rubbing in circles. Leave it on for 3-5 minutes, then rinse off. You can even make up a batch of these and store them in the freezer to use once a day.
Because of its exfoliating and astringent properties, an overnight lemon juice treatment on problem areas can help you achieve beautiful, smooth skin by morning. Lemon juice or ‘zest’ you make from the peel can be mixed into most commercial skin lotions and cleansers.
Make your own lemon mask: whip up an egg white and squeeze lemon juice into it – or just mix some lemon into a commercial mayonnaise — for an instant facial or hair treatment. Mix lemon and honey for their antibacterial and moisturizing effects and a lovely lingering perfume.
To exfoliate really fast, simply apply lemon juice on clean skin for 5-10 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water.
And of course, you can drink lemonade or a mojito, squeeze lemon juice on almost anything for flavor – and use lemons to clean clothes, countertops, windows… Lemons have almost endless uses.
