A NEW SHAMPOO MADE OF WOOD?
Despite accolades for Paul
Penders Time Release Shampoo, company scientists are working on another hair care innovation that may prove even more exciting: a line of shampoos, body washes and facial cleansers that contain saponine, a natural, wood-based ingredient that can both cleanse and condition the hair and skin.
According to reknown Malaysian herbalist Dr. Ghani, who also maintains a laboratory at Paul Penders Langkawi headquarters, the original population of the jungle in Lancang Pahang, the Orang Asli (the indigenous people), for thousands of years have used extracts from certain trees as shampoo and continue to do so.
Wood from the Labu Kapas tree, for example, contains saponine. Saponine is an active ingredientthat can be used for three purposes: as a preservative, as a conditioner or smoother(e.g. hair conditioner), and as acleansing agent.
However, a key technological challenge remains the question of preserving the saponine while taking advantage of all three effects.
Extracting saponine and using it as a preservative (without the conditioning and cleansing effects) is straightforward. It is also simple to extract saponine for use as a cleanser or a conditioner. The challenge lines in the extraction and preservation of saponine in a way that allows all three effects to be active at the same time.
One of the issues will be to avoid contamination of the extracted saponine. Since this is a natural product, this can very easily happen.
According to Dr. Gatot, Paul Penders head of R&D, extracting and keeping all three effects simultaneously has previously only succeeded in a university laboratory. It has never before been done commercially.
This is one of several ongoing projects at Paul Penders and is representative of the company's philosophy towards new product development: taking a natural ingredient that has been effectively used for many generations and turning it into a commercial product that can be used instead of a chemical product.
PAUL PENDERS PRODUCTS NOW IN NEW ZEALAND
A wide range of
Paul Penders products are now available for sale in New Zealand. Belinda and Ryan from Taradale, Hawkes Bay have just joined as distributors.
"Ryan and I are passionate about natural health care, which is why we opened our health shop in Taradale," says Belinda. "During the time we've had our shop, we've discovered that natural doesn't always mean "natural". We've come across many products claiming to be natural just because they contain one or two natural ingredients."
"Often the consumer is not aware of this, which is why we are so excited about Paul Penders product range - where natural means natural!"
The Ryans try to educate consumers about the importance of using natural products, and how using natural ingredients lead to better health.
Taradale is an established community with a rich heritage dating to the 1850's.
Before the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake, Taradale was separated from the nearest town by a harbour lagoon and tidal mudflats. These barriers forced Taradale's township and pioneer farming settlers to develop staunch independence, with their own facilities, businesses and recreational resources. Many of the elements of this historic heritage remain today. The Western Hills of Taradale include Sugar Loaf Hill, named after its steep sides and rounded top. Eastern views from the summit span the Heretaunga Plains, while western views include the picturesque Ruahine and Kaweka Ranges.
BABY BATH PRODUCTS BEING TESTED FOR SAFETY
Several Johnson & Johnson
baby bath products are being tested by health authorities in China following allegations they contain carcinogenic chemicals.
Although there has been no ban, newspapers in China have reported one of the country's major supermarkets (Nonggongshang) has removed the products from its shelves.
The product testing is in response to a report published by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, which stated that Johnson & Johnson's products were among many baby personal care items to contain traces of 1,4 dioxane and formaldehyde. These chemicals have been linked to cancer and skin allergies.
However, according to the US cosmetics trade body (PCPC) the levels of the chemicals found by CSC do not pose a threat to human health.
Neither chemical is added to cosmetics products as an ingredient: 1,4 dioxane is produced as a by-product in the manufacture of certain detergent and solvent ingredients; and formaldehyde is released in small concentrations by certain formaldehyde-containing preservatives.
Paul Penders will soon introduce an all natural baby body lotion. As with all Paul Penders products, the new baby lotion will contain no synthetic ingredients and be formulated for gentle, yet effective use.
EU COSMETICS TESTING BAN MAY NOT BE ENFORCEABLE
Earlier this month, a ban on animal testing of cosmetics ingredients cosmetics ingredients in the European Union was introduced. In addition, a marketing ban staggered for different endpoints was enacted.
It is no longer possible to market a product in the EU which contains ingredients that were tested on animals after March 11 2009 for skin irritancy, phototoxicity, corrosivity, percutaneous absorption, genotoxicity, ocular irritancy and acute toxicity.
Other endpoints, such as reproductive toxicity, will be included in the marketing ban set for 2013.
But UK charity the Dr Hadwen Trust says that companies can easily exploit the ban. "This would be particularly easy for companies producing cosmetics in addition to other products across multiple sectors such as household cleaners and pharmaceuticals," said the charity in a statement.
This is made even easier as companies are not obliged to make toxicological research public. Most toxicological testing is not made public and companies are under no legal obligation to put it into the public domain.
It might be in a cosmetics company's best interest to publish their toxicological testing results if they wanted to continue using new ingredients and on-animal alternatives were not yet available. But this would be unlikely, say industry experts.
