A type of organic compound that lies within the stratum corneum layer of the skin, ceramides help prevent loss of moisture. When ceramide levels decline, water evaporates more quickly and skin becomes dry. According to a research study published in the October 2006 issue of Skin & Aging, products that contain ceramides can help rejuvenate the skin to a far greater extent than products containing other types of emollients such as petroleum. The study included 10 participants between the ages of 18 and 60 years who were treated with a ceramide-based emollient on one half of their face and a petrolatum emollient on the other half.

In February 2007, Paul Penders sponsored German triathlete Kjell Schioeberg when Schioeberg competed in the Ironman Malaysia Triathlon in Langkawi.
Having received a Master of Physical Education degree from the University of Hamburg in 2006, Schioeberg has successfully completed 11 previous Ironman competitions. The Malaysia race is tough, though, consisting of a swim, bike and run course in temperatures averaging 43 degrees C, or about 110 degrees F. Because of the extreme heat, it's known as one of the most difficult Ironman competitions. Last year, Schioeberg finished Ironman Malaysia in 9 hours 51 minutes, to place nineth overall and first in the amateur division. This year, he beat that record by three minutes, finishing in 9 hours and 48 minutes.
For his first professional race on the island, Schioeberg wore Paul Penders A.M. Moisturizers and Paul Penders Herbal Sunscreen SPF22.
